Day 1
Arrive at Edinburgh Airport and pick up
self-drive car*. Drive via Stirling
pausing to visit its ancient castle on
the rock commanding magnificent views of
the wide plains all around. Continue
through the Trossachs, the so-called
‘Highlands in Miniature’, to Drymen,
near the shores of Loch Lomond.
Overnight in Loch Lomond area.
Day 2
Follow the banks of Loch Lomond and
continue westwards along Loch Fyne to
Inveraray pausing to visit the castle,
seat of the Duke of Argyll. Continue
along one of the most beautiful valleys
of the west coast from Lochgilphead to
Oban for overnight.
Day 3
Either a visit to Loch Awe or for the
more energetic a short drive to the
ferry at Oban and drive over the Isle of
Mull for the day, also visiting the
sacred Isle of Iona where St. Columba
brought Christianity from Ireland in
AD563. Overnight as Day 2.
Day 4
Continue along the magnificent west
coast before taking the famous 'Road To
The Isles' from Fort William to Mallaig
with its splendid views to the islands
of Rhum, Eigg, Muck, Skye and the
Morvern peninsula. Ferry crossing to the
southern shores of the Isle of Skye.
Pause to visit the Clan Donald Museum en
route to Portree. Overnight on the Isle
of Skye.
Day 5
Full day to explore the Isle of Skye,
the impressive Cuillin Hills, Dunvegan
Castle and the Folk Museum. Return to
the same hotel as Day 4 for second
overnight.
Day 6
Leave Skye via the Kyleakin Bridge,
rejoining the mainland. Then drive
across stunning country-side to
Inverness via Fort Augustus, along the
shores of Loch Ness. Overnight in the
Inverness area.
Day 7
Drive to Grantown on Spey for a visit to
one of the many distilleries in the area
before heading south into the Dee
Valley, past Balmoral Castle through the
dramatic landscape of Glen Shee to
Blairgowrie and Perth. Pause to visit
Scone Palace, former crowning place of
Scottish kings. Drive to Edinburgh later
and overnight.
Day 8
Free morning for shopping or
sightseeing. Short drive to Edinburgh
Airport for departure.
